CGHS has specific rules for emergency care that are much more flexible than planned admissions. Here is what you need to know.
In a genuine medical emergency, you do not need a referral from your CGHS Wellness Centre. You can go directly to any CGHS empanelled private hospital — including Gini — without any paperwork upfront.
CGHS pre-authorisation (pre-auth) is mandatory for planned admissions. For genuine emergencies, it is waived. The hospital initiates emergency CGHS intimation on your behalf after you are stabilised.
Present your CGHS beneficiary card at admission. Emergency treatment — including ICU, ventilator support, emergency surgery, medications, and investigations — is cashless under CGHS empanelment. You are not required to pay upfront.
Once stable, you or a family member should inform your CGHS Wellness Centre about the emergency admission — ideally within 24 hours and no later than 72 hours. Gini's CGHS desk will help you with this process.
Once your emergency is stabilised and you are medically fit for discharge or transfer, CGHS may ask for post-authorisation for continued elective treatment. Gini will guide you on this transition.
If the patient is unconscious or unable to communicate, a family member can present the CGHS card and initiate emergency admission. The hospital will treat first and collect documents as the situation stabilises.
Any condition that is life-threatening or could cause permanent harm if not treated immediately qualifies as a CGHS emergency. Common qualifying conditions include:

🚨 Emergency Line: +91 82888 43800Once you are admitted, Gini's CGHS desk takes over the paperwork. Here is what the process looks like:
The emergency team begins treatment immediately on arrival. Present your CGHS card to the admissions desk. If the card is unavailable, treatment proceeds and documentation is completed once the situation stabilises.
Gini's CGHS desk submits emergency intimation to the CGHS office on your behalf — typically within 24 hours of admission. This notifies CGHS that an emergency admission has occurred at an empanelled hospital.
You or a family member should contact your registered CGHS Wellness Centre to inform them of the emergency admission. Gini can provide a written note to support this. This should happen within 24–72 hours.
For longer stays or transition to planned treatment, CGHS may issue post-authorisation. Gini coordinates this directly with the CGHS office. You do not need to manage this yourself.
At discharge, Gini raises the CGHS bill directly with the CGHS office. You do not pay the bill — you only sign the discharge summary. If there are any personal choice differentials (e.g., a premium implant you requested), these are the only amounts billed to you personally, and always agreed in advance.
Post-discharge follow-up at Gini can be done under CGHS as an outpatient — with your Wellness Centre referral. See our full admission process guide →
